The revival of Hungarian industry between the two World Wars was driven by assimilated Jewish industrialists such as Manfréd Weiss (engineering), Gedeon Richter (pharmaceuticals), Lipót Aschner (Tungsram), and Leó Goldberger (textiles).
A prime example of this Jewish economic elite was Leó Goldberger, the “Textile King,” who was a close friend, advisor, and even card-playing partner of Miklós Horthy, as well as a member of Parliament.

The drama about Leó Goldberger’s life explores the mechanisms of self-deception that prevented these broad-minded, modern-thinking Jewish citizens from acknowledging reality and escaping in time.
What sustained their blind faith that nothing could happen to them — even when, under the anti-Jewish laws, Goldberger himself was expelled from his own factory?
And even then, when his train was already bound for the concentration camp where his life would come to an end, that faith still did not abandon him.
