The ironic title refers to a series of misfortunes in the adventurous life of Menachem Mendel, an Odessa drifter who dreams of striking it rich and tries his hand as a marriage broker. The silent film was directed a hundred years ago, in 1926, by Aleksandr Granovsky, founder of the Moscow State Jewish Theatre. The intertitles were written by Isaac Emmanuilovich Babel, while the visual design in several scenes reflects the influence of Marc Chagall.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with Anna Geréb, an expert on Russian-Jewish silent cinema.
