Barbra Streisand worked a miracle: she reinvented the concept of beauty and transformed what was considered unattractive into something beautiful. Barbra was born without the conventional features of beauty: according to her own mother, she even had a “pear-shaped” head. Her hair had not fully grown in even during her teenage years, and she was missing her front teeth, which she replaced with chewing gum. Her father died when she was young, a loss that haunted her throughout her life. Her mother was emotionally distant, did not believe in her daughter’s acting ambitions, and rarely attended her performances. Added to this was a harsh stepfather, all surrounded by the hardships of poverty.
Despite all this, relying solely on her own inner strength, she transformed herself into a remarkable, captivating, and truly beautiful actress and singer, building a worldwide career. She processed the pain of losing her father through her art (in the film Yentl) and came to terms with her emotionally distant mother (in The Prince of Tides). How she achieved all this is the story explored in our play about Barbra Streisand’s life at the Spinoza Theatre.
